Meet the British yachtsman and his Hugo Boss Yacht making big waves in the sailing world.
It was the British businessman who ran London’s victorious bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Sir Keith Mills who helped Alex Thomson early in his career. The 43 year old ended up joining forces with British America’s Cup campaign TEAMORIGIN. With the help of Mills, Alex Thomson broke into the professional solo sailing circuit when he was pretty young.
The British skipper is a huge talent in the international yacht racing circuit, and competes in the high speed, extreme IMOCA 60 class. Thomson sails a pretty impressive looking vessel, the 60 ft Hugo Boss Yacht marks the longest, most coveted sailing partnerships in history as he has been sponsored by BOSS since 2003.
Thomson’s Clipper Race win in 1999 made him the youngest skipper ever to win a round-the-world yacht race, putting his name firmly on the map and in the world record books. He is an around the world solo sailor, and holds the 24-hour world speed sailing record for solo mono-hulls (537 nautical miles at an average speed of 22.4 knots).
In 2014 he took part in the Vendee Globe in said Hugo Boss Yacht, but was forced to retire after damage to the carbon fitting that attached the boom to the deck. During the 2016, Thomson set new fastest reference times from Sables d’Olonne to the Equator. However, 13 days into the race the Hugo Boss yacht starboard foil broke after hitting an unidentified floating object, therefore hampering Alex’s progress throughout the rest of the course. Despite his foil and anemometer/autopilot problems, Thomson finished the race with the second fastest time on record – 74 days 19 h 35 min 15 seconds. As of January 20th this year (2017), Thompson became the fastest Britain to sail single handed, none stop around the globe. Pretty impressive!
